Livestock Handling and Product Traceability

The health and welfare of animals processed by Teys is of primary importance at all stages of livestock handling. Good husbandry and strict quarantine measures are promoted to ensure the considerate treatment of animals and the maintenance of disease-free stock.

Australia has a widely-accepted disease-free status, and the Australian Cattle Industry has developed systems to verify and assure the food safety status and other quality attributes of cattle.

The National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) is a traceability system based on a “whole of life” electronic tag on individual cattle allowing tracing of cattle from the farm to the point of processing. Beef carcases can be correlated with the original Property Identification Code (PIC) for each animal, ensuring precise traceback through the processing plant from when the animal arrives to when the final beef products are shipped to the customer.

Food Safety & HACCP

At Teys, Food Safety is a top priority and our comprehensive Quality Assurance program is applied extensively throughout the entire process from receiving livestock to shipping and loadout.

Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) is a process used for the identification, evaluation and control of food safety hazards. Our HACCP program is underpinned by a series of comprehensive sanitation standard operating procedures.  Teys operates a comprehensive HACCP program which, in combination with good hygienic practices and education of food handlers, is pivotal to ensure that the highest standards of food safety are met.

Compliance, Inspection & Testing

All Teys products are assessed for compliance to the Australian Standards and Overseas Country Requirements. The Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS) oversees the meat hygiene, safety regulations and certification at all Teys plants.

The Teys Quality Assurance (QA) Department conducts monitoring and auditing activities at all processing premises to ensure compliance with company and government programs.

Teys operates an extensive sampling and testing program to verify that the strict standards applied in the processing areas have produced food that is safe for consumption.  Daily testing is conducted on beef carcases and carton product, prior to shipping to our customers.
