About Us
Teys is an Australian, vertically integrated, export beef processing and value adding company that has grown from humble beginnings. The story of the lives of the founding four Teys brothers is one of overcoming adversity and working hard to ultimately achieve national and international success in their chosen business.
The founding four Teys brothers were faced with misfortune at an early age, when a boarding house fire destroyed what little the family had, forcing them to be fostered out to relatives.
The brothers learned the butchering trade while still young, and by building their skills and working hard, they went on to run and manage shops around Brisbane, Queensland. They got their start in beef production during the meat strike of 1946 when they purchased a small slaughter yard at Beenleigh, south west of Brisbane, to supply meat into their shops.
Today Teys is the largest Australian-owned and second-largest beef processing company in Australia, processing one million cattle and turning over more than $AUD1.2B per annum. Teys comprises four modern beef processing facilities, a 30,000-head feedlot, a tannery, wholesaling divisions, and a value-added facility.
Teys operates on five main principles. First, we believe that food safety is something that can never be compromised. Food safety is the unwritten bond between consumer and processor. The consumer does not just expect food that is wholesome and safe to eat, the consumer demands it. Second, we believe in providing a quality product, consistent with specification that meets the needs of customers. Third, we believe in enabling our staff to reach their ultimate potential. We allocate many resources to equipping our staff with the skills required to run the business. Fourth, we believe in reinvestment in modern and efficient beef plants. Finally, we are committed to minimising our impact on the environment by undertaking best practice initiatives in this area.
While Teys is a modern corporation, it is founded on good old-fashioned principles, such as loyalty, integrity, hard work, humility and long-term thinking, and on the understanding that a deal is a deal.
